I spent 48 years caring about what people thought of me. I'm not spending the rest of my life caring about that anymore!

The Weather and Obama

Last night it rained in Phoenix. We're talking serious, hurricane resembling rain! It was a great night.

My two year old niece "Butterfly" and I watched Senator Obama give his acceptance speech. And although I'm still not confident of what his presidency will look like, I had to watch the speech because my parents would have been so proud to have seen him, standing there in that great crowd, speaking of his plans as President.
I have to give my niece kudos for being a patient little munchkin for most of the speech. She quietly played around me, glancing at the screen only during the cheering and the fireworks at the end. She doesn't understand why the room was so quiet and why I was so proudly telling her, "Look Butter, look at that guy!" She'll understand one day once we've told her how her grandparents and other Black Americans endured injustice and even death to pay for all that Senator Obama embodies for us as a people and a nation.
After the speech we did a quick run at the grocery store then sat outside and watched the lightning show. It was spectacular, far nicer than regular old fireworks. Then the first storm hit and I started looking for candles because the winds were strong enough to topple two garbage cans and bend my neighbour's trees. I kept the door open because I love rain and wondered if she (Butterfly) would become frightened but no, she made me proud again. She would venture out as far as I thought she should go (it's still lightning at this point) and began a little mantra of "rain, wa-wa, rain, wa-wa". Who knows, perhaps she'll be a rain worshipper like her Aunt Debo Blue?

I forgot all about watching the convention last night although I did later watch some parts of his speech and he -from what I saw -did a really great job with the speech. Not that it surprises me because I feel he is an excellent speaker. Always cracks me up though to hear the others criticizing him that he doesn't have enough "experience." Do the others have any more experience as president? None of them had any experience as senators either at one point in time and I think it is rather a "learn as you go" type experience one gets from/for that job, isn't it?
Anyhow, I spent the evening watching "The Color Purple" -love that movie more every time I see it.
Next time we get a big old electrical storm here, I'll do a rain dance and sing "Rain, Rain go away, Go see Debo Blue, not me, today!" (I don't mind regular rainfall (although it makes my back and legs ache) but I had thunder and lightning, big time!
Just glad to see you posting again and hope this isn't a one shot to last for another 4 months or so either! I miss ya and your good words, my friend.

Savant-welcome to my quiet little pad in this great big pond called Blogger.
